Energy News Update

  • Transformer Crunch Slows AI Development. Adding to last month’s reporting on AI data centers placing mounting strain on an aging power grid, those same data centers are now facing delays or outright cancellations. Nearly half of U.S. data centers planned for 2026 cannot meet their scheduled completion dates because transformers, switchgear and other critical electrical equipment simply aren’t available within the timeframes required for project construction. With transformer lead times stretching up to five years, the AI infrastructure race is colliding with a hard physical constraint. The case for protecting every asset already in the ground has never been stronger.
  • Substation Transformer Fire: A transformer owned by NV Energy caught fire at the Gonder Substation in Nevada, producing a smoke plume visible for miles and snarling traffic on U.S. Highway 93. Local fire crews and Mt. Wheeler Power personnel responded quickly, and no service outages were reported — a best-case outcome that underscores the importance of early detection.
  • Worker Injured in Transformer Explosion: A construction worker suffered serious burn injuries after a transformer exploded near a gas tank at a west-side San Antonio construction site. The incident is a stark reminder that transformer failures don’t just disrupt power — they endanger lives. Proximity to flammable materials can rapidly escalate an electrical fault into a life-threatening event.
  • Fuel Stack Futures: The global fuel cell stack market was valued at $10.52 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $38.78 billion by 2034, growing at a 15.6% CAGR, driven by rising demand for zero-emission power solutions across transportation, backup power, and material handling. As hydrogen is colorless and odorless, and the stack itself is a key leak risk, hydrogen detection sensors are a critical safety and regulatory requirement. This means the sector’s rapid growth is likely to drive parallel demand in the hydrogen sensor market as well, with sensor placement recommended for the fuel cell stack, fuel processing system and hydrogen storage areas to promote safety.

Trivia Time

How much weight can a modern, electric forklift handle?

  1. Up to 1,000 lbs
  2. 3,000-5,000 lbs
  3. 10,000 lbs or more

Answer: All of the above, because it depends on the machine. Standard electric forklifts used in warehouses (Class I, II, III) can handle loads of 3,000-12,000 lbs, although for heavier loads, other options are available. Electric forklifts are dominating warehouse presence, representing more than 60% of all new forklift purchases, due to lower total cost of ownership, zero emissions and impressive fast-charging lithium-ion battery technology.

Warehouse charging areas for electric forklifts are a prime hydrogen monitoring application, as lead-acid batteries routinely off-gas hydrogen during the charging process, creating potential ignition risks near charging stations.
