H2scan’s Jeff Donato and Stephen McIntyre joined industry leaders at the NIBS Battery Conference last year, where Jeff presented his paper “Ventilation, Gas Detection and Hydrogen Technologies in Battery Systems.”
H2scan was proud to be represented at the Minnesota Power Systems Conference by Chris Calzone, Regional Sales Manager, North America.

Energy Transition Update

The energy sector faces mounting pressure as global data center electricity demand is projected to more than double by 2030, reaching approximately 945 TWh—equivalent to Japan’s total consumption. In the EU, data center demand could hit 287 TWh annually by 2030, a 170% increase since 2022, with AI-focused facilities requiring up to 100 MW of power each. This surge compounds an already critical transformer shortage, with power transformer demand up 119% since 2019, lead times averaging 128 weeks and a projected 30% shortfall for 2025. Experts project a multi-year “deficit” in transformer supply.

California is piloting hydrogen blending with natural gas through five approved projects testing how the state’s 3-million-mile pipeline network could transport green hydrogen while reducing methane emissions. Researchers indicate up to 20% hydrogen by volume is generally safe, though critics raise concerns about health risks and community impacts. Meanwhile, AI is both an energy consumption driver but also a potential advantage: AI products are emerging that offer energy optimization solutions, including improved renewable forecasting and predictive maintenance that could save approximately 300 TWh of electricity annually worldwide.
