Energy News Update

  • The AI boom is straining the grid. Data centers could account for up to 12% of U.S. electricity use by 2028, placing mounting strain on an aging power grid, according to new research from Georgia Tech. Meanwhile, NERC has warned of “elevated risk” of summer electricity shortfalls in 2026 and beyond as utilities scramble to keep pace. With roughly 70% of the grid approaching end-of-life, condition-based monitoring of aging transformer fleets is no longer optional — it’s a frontline defense.

  • Battery storage is booming — and so is the need to monitor it. The U.S. is on pace to add a record 86 GW of new electric generating capacity in 2026, with solar and battery storage accounting for 79% of all planned additions, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Battery storage alone is expected to reach 24 GW this year — a 60% jump over 2025’s already record-setting pace. As thousands of new BESS installations come online, hydrogen monitoring becomes an essential safety layer that operators can’t afford to overlook.

  • Transformers must keep pace with grid expansion. With large transformer lead times now exceeding 200 weeks and prices up 60–80% since 2020, protecting the assets you have has never been more critical. H2scan CEO David Meyers makes the case in T&D World this month: equipping transformers with monitoring sensors and predictive analytics is essential to grid resilience — and the most cost-effective path forward while new capacity comes online.

Article: Why is Hydrogen a Key Gas for Transformer Monitoring?

One of the more common questions we field is “Why is hydrogen the Key Gas for transformer monitoring? What makes it special?” The answer is both simple and complex, rooted in the behavior of insulating liquids under internal transformer fault conditions.

White Paper: Ventilation, Gas Detection and Hydrogen Technologies in Battery Systems

When hydrogen risk lives in your battery rooms, “good enough” ventilation and gas detection isn’t good enough anymore. Here is a practical roadmap to designing, specifying, and defending hydrogen safety strategies that actually stand up to global codes and real-world operations.
